El Local is an independent space for photography in the centre of Madrid, a group of active photographers sharing a space with the aim of giving a home to a community.

El Local’s proposal invites us to reflect on the collective processes that build the societies we inhabit, and their consequences. We begin by glimpsing how personal identity is constructed through interpersonal relationships and one’s own experiences, as seen in Shinji Nagabe’s work Dioramas. Continuing from the personal, we enter into a collective process through the work of Karina Morante where in Identidad/Identidad.es she relates the return journey of her own grandmothers to their native village, an example of the internal migrations that took place in countries such as Peru. Moving away from the personal and into the collective we arrive at the work of Emma Álvarez Marty, Fuga Color Mutante, where she investigates how the management of a water treatment plant, that provides water to several villages in the mountains of Madrid, contaminates its own river as a consequence of its activity. To take the collective to an abstract plane, we find the work of Ignacio Navas, where in Grisallas Sin Título he confronts us with the models and icons that have served as the basis of occidental society and have become obsolete as a tool for explaining the world.

This proposal is possible thanks to the patronage of DiGood Collection.
