Vanessa Roca (Sant Carles de la Ràpita, 1990) is a photographer and filmmaker. She is currently living in Barcelona. Her work reflects on the human condition through self- documentary and visual diaries, mostly in analog format.

She co-founded Ananta Collective production company with which she codirected the documentary film ‘Món Montseny, human nature’, broadcast in Betevé (2016). Currently, she is part of the New Element production company, working on both personal and commercial projects. Her latest audiovisual project has been ‘Quarantine’, a short self- documentary on confinement directed jointly with the poet Diana Glatz. The project has been selected by BARCIFF (Barcelona Indie Filmmakers Festival) and Virtual Cinema Festival (Seattle).

Her personal photographic work has been published in online magazines such as Nhudes Mag, Polysème Mag or Blasfemia Mag. She has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including FineArt Igualada (2017) with her project ‘El Salto’ and in FotoLimo (Portbou, 2020) with the collaborative project ‘Insula’. This last project was also published as a fanzine curated by Aladeriva.lab.

In 2020 and 2021, her work ‘Never Neverland’ was finalist at the 16th Fòrum Fotogràfic Can Basté (Barcelona) and selected by the Art Photo Bcn for their portfolio reviews.

Neverland is a fictional island where its inhabitants, called “the lost children”, are known for refusing to grow up, living without rules or responsibilities, spending most of their time enjoying themselves or having adventures. Never Neverland is a project about the feeling of leaving your youth when you reach 30.
With the project, the author reflects on the transition from youth to adulthood as a leap from one stage to another, understanding that non- space between two times as an interior border, a rite of passage in which the effervescence of experiences and internal conflicts become evident.
This transit appears as a representation of a fictitious limit, the result of the tension between the individual and social pressure. Going through this limit generates suspicious glances towards what is going away and towards what is to come, but also reflection and questions: What does it mean to be young? What makes you an adult? Is there really something to say goodbye to in this process?
Never Neverland is the self-exposure of intimate moments related to love, loneliness, friendship, sex, nature, night and transgression. The project shows the small actions that build the foundation and that, as they build the foundation, cease to be small.
